On Friday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed India’s selection for the first two Test matches of the four-match series against Australia.
Notably, the governing body of cricket has revealed the roster for the forthcoming white-ball series against New Zealand, which will begin on January 18. This will come before India hosts Australia in the longest format of cricket.
Prithvi Shaw was recalled to the team for the T20 Internationals against New Zealand as a result of his outstanding batting performance in the domestic circuit. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan were given their first call ups to the Test squad.
Fans expressed their displeasure with the selection committee on social media when it was announced that Suryakumar Yadav will be replacing Sarfaraz Khan for the first two Tests against Australia.
In the Ranji Trophy competition that took place in 2021-22, Sarfaraz amassed 982 runs at an average of 122.75, including four centuries and two half-centuries. The highest score he ever received was 275.
In the meantime, he has scored 431 runs in the current edition, with an average of 107.75, a strike rate of 70.54, two centuries, and one half-century.
In spite of this, the selection committee for the Indian national cricket team came to the conclusion that Suryakumar Yadav should be given a shot at a spot in India’s Test squad. Yadav has been performing exceptionally well in white-ball formats, particularly Twenty20 International cricket.
However, it has not been well received by the followers of the team. The following is how they responded when they heard the selection:
The disrespect shown to the Ranji Trophy by selecting Suryakumar Yadav ahead of Sarfaraz Khan in test matches is unacceptable.
That player has been one of the First Class cricket competition’s most reliable run scorers, and he deserves that call-up more than anybody else does.
It is safe to assume that Ranji performances have begun to hold less value as a result of the inclusion of Ishan Kishan and SKY in the squad, and that public opinion has begun to hold more sway.
Ishan is still understandable, but the SKY selection is perplexing and will not send a positive signal to players like Sarfaraz and Hanuma.
