MS Dhoni has been India’s most successful captain in international cricket. His outstanding captaincy talents have helped the country win numerous worldwide events, including the T20 World Cup 2007, World Cup 2011, and Champions Trophy 2013. His ability with the bat and behind the stumps has left an indelible mark on the game of cricket.

His achievements are not exclusive to international cricket. Dhoni is the joint-most successful captain in the history of the Indian Premier League, having completed the 18th edition. With five titles and several memorable moments with the Chennai Super Kings, he established himself as one of the premier league’s most recognisable personalities.

Dhoni has played for India in 90 Tests (144 innings), 350 ODIs (297 innings), and 98 T20Is (85 innings). Overall, he has scored over 17,000 runs in international cricket. He also has 829 dismissals under his belt, cementing his place among the all-time best wicketkeepers. Aside from his cricketing successes, his on-field manner has been very inspiring.

What is MS Dhoni doing now?

Dhoni last appeared in IPL 2025 for CSK. He took over the captaincy after Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined roughly halfway through the competition. CSK had a disappointing season across all departments. They finished last in the points standings for the first time in their 16-season history.

When asked about his cricketing future after CSK’s final group-stage game, he was equivocal in his response. The 43-year-old had claimed that he will take a few months to examine his physical condition before deciding on his future in the IPL. Since retiring from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni has only played in the IPL.

How did MS Dhoni fare in IPL 2025?

In 13 innings for CSK in IPL 2025, Dhoni scored 196 runs at a strike rate of 135.17 with 12 fours and as many sixes under his belt. His highest score was an unbeaten 30. This was also the fourth consecutive season that he had registered a double-digit number of sixes in the IPL. Whenever Dhoni was at the crease, there was immense anticipation amongst the CSK fans.

When will MS Dhoni play for India next?

As mentioned above, Dhoni had already hung up his boots on August 15, 2020. His last gig with the Indian team was in the capacity of mentor during the T20 World Cup in 2021. He has not really shown any inclination towards the coaching side of things as of now.

However, that hasn’t stopped fans from hoping for a comeback by Dhoni in the form of head coach or batting coach. Although there is a bleak possibility of this occurring as of now, it would be wrong to completely rule out such an event.
