The Mumbai Indians (MI) have made a spectacular recovery, restoring their playoff aspirations with a string of strong games after previously lingering near the bottom of the IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League) table. After winning six straight games, the five-time champions, who started the season with four losses in their first five games, are currently in fourth place in the standings.

With 14 points from 12 games and a positive net run rate (NRR) of 1.156 after their most recent defeat to the Gujarat Titans, they are still in the running for a postseason berth. Sanjay Manjrekar, a former Indian cricket player who is now a broadcaster, discussed Mumbai’s comeback and commended the squad for its capacity to reorganise and overcome early-season obstacles.

“This IPL season is one of Suryakumar Yadav’s greatest. Additionally, MI has players that flourish under pressure, such Rohit Sharma, despite his recent play, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya. They have won repeatedly because of this. MI has its own match-winners, much like CSK had Shane Watson or Mike Hussey step up in pivotal situations. They are such a dangerous side because of their ability to step up when needed,” Manjrekar stated on JioHotstar.

Interestingly, Mumbai’s resurgence has been greatly aided by their match-winners. The batting order has been strengthened by Suryakumar Yadav’s form, and since his comeback, Jasprit Bumrah has dominated with the ball. Sanjay Manjrekar thinks MI’s strength is in their ability to assign players to the appropriate roles and perform well under pressure, even though certain international players are unable to play in important games.

“Even though a few international players, like Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks, might miss important games, I don’t think their campaign will be ruined. They have been successful in assigning players to the appropriate positions. They appeared rather uncertain at first, but now they appear to have clarity,” he continued.

Winning both of the team’s remaining league games—against the Delhi Capitals on May 21 and the Punjab Kings on May 26—would secure a postseason berth. But because of their high net run rate, a single victory may still put them in the top four if other outcomes work out.
