Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik believed that the injured Rishabh Pant should consider splitting his match fees with substitute wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. Karthik’s comments on broadcast came on Day 4 of the third Test of England and India’s five-match series. Notably, Pant was replaced by his deputy after becoming injured on the first day of the game.

Jurel was allowed to replace Pant as the substitute wicketkeeper under the new ICC criteria after Pant received a hard hit on the index finger of his left hand while attempting to collect one of Jasprit Bumrah’s deliveries in the 34th over of Day 1 at Lord’s. Despite drinking water and taking meds, the southpaw had to leave the pitch in the following over.

“Rishabh Pant should share his match fees with Dhruv Jurel,” Karthik said during the broadcast of the fourth day of Lord’s play.

Jurel has been quite good with his glovework in the game thus far. He capitalised on a rare opportunity to ensure Ollie Pope walked back on the first delivery of the post-Tea session on the first day. Jurel took three catches in England’s first innings.

On the fourth day, he stepped up to keep wickets for speedsters Akash Deep and Nitish Kumar Reddy from close range. Not only that, but Jurel has been quite successful in conceding a lot of extras as a result of the inconsistent bounce and unfettered swing of the pacers in London.

Despite needing medication and so not playing after being hurt, Pant came out to bat in his team’s opening innings and performed admirably. He made a tough 74 off 112 before being run out by Three Lions captain Ben Stokes on a direct hit from cover point.

Pant could most definitely be expected to recover by the time the fourth Test commences. Ever since making his Test debut in 2024 against the same opposition at home, Jurel has seemed to be the management’s go-to wicketkeeper.
