Rishabh Pant, India’s Test vice-captain, may face disciplinary action following a disagreement with umpire Paul Reiffel on Day 3 of the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds.

The incident occurred after England batsman Harry Brook hit a boundary off Mohammed Siraj. Pant voiced dissatisfaction with the ball’s condition and demanded that the umpire investigate. However, Reiffel discovered no anomalies and declined to replace the ball.

In fury, the 27-year-old threw the ball to the ground, eliciting loud boos from the Headingley fans. The wicketkeeper-batter’s actions may contravene two sections of the ICC Code of Conduct.

The first probable violation is’showing dissatisfaction at an umpire’s judgement during an international match,’ which stems from his argument with Reiffel. The second is Article 2.9, which prohibits ‘throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment, such as a water bottle) at or near a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee, or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match’.

Rishabh Pant totals 150 catches.

During the same day of play, Pant achieved a big personal milestone. Pant accomplished 150 catches as a wicket-keeper in Test cricket after dismissing Ollie Pope, who was caught behind off Prasidh Krishna. He now joins an elite group of Indian keepers who have reached this milestone, trailing only Syed Kirmani (160 catches) and MS Dhoni (256 catches).

Pant now has 151 catches and 15 stumpings, for a total of 166 Test dismissals. MS Dhoni is India’s most successful wicketkeeper, with 256 catches and 38 stumpings for a total of 294 dismissals.
