Leg-spinner Suyash Sharma of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) disclosed that he had several hernias prior to the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
During his sickness, the 21-year-old credited the team for helping him get better faster by sending him to London for surgery.
We practiced in February, and I had a thing going on for the past two years. After getting my injections, I played. The issue I was having was not even recognised by us in India. [So] I had surgery in London thanks to RCB. James Pipe, the physio for RCBC, and I met there. “I was treated like family by him and his family,” Suyash Sharma remarked.
“Three separate hernias occurred in me. To be honest, I wasn’t really hopeful of playing in the opening game [this season]. After three or four games, I was told I wouldn’t be participating because I had undergone major surgery. I was well taken care of by Pipey and his family, though. Thanks to this franchise, I was able to become in perfect shape. The discomfort had been bothering me for the previous two years before then. Playing in agony was nothing new to me,” he continued.

The leggie previously represented Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the past two IPL seasons, and opened up about the challenges that he faced before entering the professional world of cricket. He admitted that RCB supported him a lot and helped him to recover.
“If you’re playing for India or a franchise, then you can still manage [to get help]. But I had this injury when I wasn’t even playing [for any team]. At that time, I wasn’t aware of anything; I just went to a physio, who told me something entirely different – so that made it difficult. RCB showed a lot of faith in me, and invested so much in me,” he added.
The Bhajanpura-born spinner has struggled to make an impact this season and has picked up only four wickets at an average of 69.75. RCB remains in the playoff hunt by securing 14 points so far. The next challenge for the Royal Challengers will be against the first team to be eliminated from IPL 2025, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the game will be held at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, May 3.
