At the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Friday, May 23, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lost a high-scoring match by 42 runs after a middle-order collapse against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
During the toss, Jitesh Sharma announced that Rajat Patidar, the usual captain, would be the Impact Player. On a belter track, he decided to field first. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head put up a 54-run partnership in the opening four overs, giving the Sunrisers a fast start. But they were out of the game within three balls.
Ishan Kishan played a brilliant innings that kept the innings together. In 2025, he missed his second century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by six runs. As SRH crushed 231/6 in their 20 overs, Heinrich Klaasen and Aniket Verma also contributed helpfully.
Phil Salt and Virat Kohli combined for 80 runs in the first seven overs of the reply, giving RCB a strong start. But Kohli was out for a 43 off 25 balls. After starting, Mayank Agarwal and Rajat Patidar were unable to step up. Despite Jitesh Sharma’s impressive cameo, RCB was almost eliminated from the run chase after his dismissal. They ultimately finished on 189. The Bengaluru-based team lost out on an opportunity to take the lead in the standings. With one game left, it will now be challenging for them to place in the top two.

2. Pat Cummins leads from the front, RCB suffer middle-order collapse
Pat Cummins played a vital cameo of 13 not out off six balls. However, he was immaculate with the ball in hand. The SRH captain took the key wicket of Phil Salt, who was threatening to take the game away from the Sunrisers. In the backend of the innings, he took the wickets of Krunal Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to finish with excellent figures of 3/28 in four overs. RCB were in the chase till the 15th over. However, they lost the wickets of Patidar, Romario Shepherd, and Jitesh in the space of five balls and that turned the game in SRH’s favour.

3. Tim David pulls up with a hamstring
RCB fans’ hearts skipped a beat when Tim David pulled up with a hamstring injury while fielding in the first innings. He signalled immediately to the dugout that he was injured. The Australian batter was forced to leave the field along with the physio. David did make an attempt to come and bat but he could only hobble a single before being dismissed off the fifth ball he faced. The RCB management will be keeping a close eye on his injury status as he has proven to be an integral part of the franchise this season.
