On Wednesday, May 21, the five-time champion Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated the Delhi Capitals (DC) by a commanding 59 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, formally securing their place in the IPL 2025 Playoffs. In the competition for the coveted championship, MI joined Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) after being the fourth and last team to advance through the league stage.

MI scored a respectable 180 runs in the first innings thanks to a spectacular 73* off 43 balls from Suryakumar Yadav. With respectable contributions, the remaining members of the MI hitting lineup helped to create a solid total. Mukesh Kumar took two wickets for DC, although during his four-over performance, he gave up 48 runs.

DC struggled early in the chase as MI bowlers continued to hit at regular intervals. Mitchell Santner’s magical spell with the ball put an end to any hope that Sameer Rizvi’s 39-run knock had given them.

Mitchell Santner led MI’s bowling attack and had an outstanding stint, capturing three wickets for only 11 runs in his four overs. Additionally, Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets in 3.2 overs for a meagre 12 runs. DC was declared out of the tournament following the defeat.
