D.K. Shivakumar, Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, revealed that the state government had plans to help develop a new stadium in Bengaluru with a seating capacity of 60,000.
The effort aims to reduce congestion and improve crowd control during large-scale public events.
While the particular location has not yet been revealed, Shivakumar said that a suitable land lot has been discovered and that more information will be released soon.
“We have chosen the location for a new stadium in Bengaluru. The proposed capacity is 60,000 seats. “More information will be shared shortly,” Shivakumar told reporters.
The move follows a fatal stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebrations near M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, which killed 11 people and injured many more.
The incident sparked significant uproar throughout the state, with authorities facing harsh criticism for weak crowd management. Due to space limits, the Chinnaswamy Stadium in the city centre has always been under strain during large cricket events and public gatherings.
Although the stadium has a declared capacity of 35,000, more than three lakh spectators reportedly congregated around it during the RCB celebrations, considerably exceeding both official estimations and the venue’s capacity. The stampede was exacerbated by a lack of enough police personnel and little planning time, resulting in a chaotic and fatal crush.
Following the incident, the state government took disciplinary action, suspending numerous senior police personnel, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner. The tragedy has spurred a political debate about administrative failures and the need for improved crowd management infrastructure.
Kempegowda envisioned a world-class Bengaluru. We are devoted to making this city better, inspired by his vision,” Shivakumar stated.
