India are set to suffer a major blow as Jasprit Bumrah may miss the second Test against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which begins on Wednesday, July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Bumrah has been India’s most devastating weapon, particularly since the Border-Gavaskar series, when the other bowlers failed to help him as he would have liked. The absence of Mohammed Shami and the mediocre form of Mohammed Siraj has put Bumrah under a lot of pressure since he needs to execute the dual task of picking up wickets and restricting runs.

Bumrah broke down during the Border-Gavaskar series’ fifth and final Test match after carrying a heavy weight in the first four games. A back injury forced him to miss the following Champions Trophy as well as the first few games for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

To avoid a similar incident, the Indian team management opted to closely monitor Bumrah’s workload. Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, stated in a news conference following the five-wicket defeat in the first Test in Leeds that Bumrah will play only three Tests in the series.

According to a person familiar with the situation, Jasprit Bumrah will not be considered for the second Test playing XI.

This will be a great disappointment for Indian supporters, as Bumrah was the only Indian bowler who looked like he could take a wicket in every period at Headingley. Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur were pricey, but Siraj lacked the penetrative skill he is known for. As a result, Bumrah accepted the challenge and scored England’s first five-for of the series in the first innings.

However, Ben Duckett and his teammates learnt from their mistakes and played better in the second inning. If the Gujarat seamer is ruled out, India might replace him with Akash Deep, who showed potential but struggled in Australia, or give Arshdeep Singh his Test debut.
