Andre Russell provided a different perspective than Virat Kohli on the argument over the relevance of Test cricket vs franchise leagues such as the Indian Premier League. He observed that, while Test cricket carries prestige, its value varies greatly between countries.

The West Indian all-rounder discussed how the terms and monetary conditions of contracts provided by Test-intensive nations differ from those of his own country.

“When you come from places like India, Australia, or England, where Test players are well-supported, the situation is very different than in the West Indies. Players in those countries are given significant central contracts to play Test cricket on the highest platforms, and they are anxious to play,” Russell told The Guardian.

He was very open about being ‘pushed out of the Test squad’.

“But for West Indians, even if you play 50 or 100 Tests, you’ll have little to show for it when you retire. I was thrown out of the Test squad. They thought I was better suited to white-ball cricket, so that was it,” he added.

For the uninitiated, Kohli mentioned the prestige of playing the two formats when asked about his retirement from the longest format of the game during a post-match interview after RCB won IPL 2025. He went so far as to imply that the IPL title win was ‘five levels below’ Test cricket.

Notably, Andre Russell only played one Test match for the West Indies in 2010.

A few months later, he made his ODI and T20I debuts in quick succession, and he went on to dominate the white-ball format for the Men in Maroon. Furthermore, he has developed into a 20-over specialist after competing in a variety of tournaments throughout the world. Russell has established himself as a T20 specialist fast bowling all-rounder.
