Players from both Australia and South Africa will honour spin king Shane Warne by donning wide-brimmed floppy hats during the playing of their respective national anthems during the Boxing Day Test.
Since Warne’s passing in March, the first Test match to be played at the MCG, which was Warne’s home ground and where he took his 700th Test wicket in his final appearance there during the 2006 Ashes, will take place on Boxing Day. The venue was also where Warne claimed his 700th Test wicket.
Cricket Australia (CA) has prepared a number of memorial events that will take place during the second Test. One of these events is a pre-match ceremony that will recognise the importance of the MCG in both Warne’s life and career.
Warne, who was only 52 years old when he passed away on March 4, was considered by many to be one of the greatest players of all time. He passed away while on holiday with friends on Samui Island, which is located in southern Thailand.
The players will walk by the spin legend’s floppy hat along with a ball as they leave the pitch to participate in the pre-match anthems. The hat was worn by the spin legend.
According to cricket.com.au, his Test cap number 350 will be painted on the turf square of the wicket at the MCG while the game is being played.
A graphic of Warne will be flashed on the screens at the MCG at 3:50 p.m. on Boxing Day, and highlights packages of the great Victorian will roll out during the match.
In addition, attendees at the game are being encouraged to wear floppy hats and apply Warne’s signature zinc cream to their faces.
It is widely believed that Warne was the one who brought back the leg-spin bowling technique. During his 15-year long career, which included 145 Test matches, he was successful in taking 708 wickets.
The cricket community was in disbelief after hearing the news of his passing, which sent shock waves throughout the community.
