The SA20 team Pretoria Capitals made the significant announcement that standout pacer Anrich Nortje will miss the whole event, which is scheduled to start on Wednesday, January 10, in Gqeberha. Notably, Nortje has been unable to play since September 2023. He was also unable to participate in the 2023 ODI World Cup or the India tour of South Africa.
Pretoria Capitals announced the news on X, then known as Twitter, to their fans; however, Nortje’s stint on the sidelines was prolonged as his back problems worsened.
“As he continues to heal from an injury, Capitals seamer Anrich Nortje will not participate in Season 2 of the #SA20. The Pretoria family hopes for a quick recovery for him,” the Capitals tweeted.

It’s noteworthy to note that the Pretoria Capitals confirmed that veteran all-rounder Hardus Viljoen will replace Anrich Nortje in the lineup following Nortje’s back injury incurred during South Africa’s five-match ODI series against Australia in September 2023.
Having played for the Joburg Super Kings in his first season as a replacement, Viljoen has found himself as an injured replacement in the SA20 for the second year running. Viljoen is still making waves in the competition, even if he was not selected in the SA20 draft.
In the first SA20 2024 match, Paarl Royals and Pretoria Capitals will battle.
In relation to the team’s assignments, Pretoria Capitals will play Paarl Royals in their opening match of the SA20 2024 season. On Friday, January 12, both teams will be in the spotlight at Boland Park in Paarl. Despite Nortje’s absence, the Capitals will be eager to play well and secure their first victory of the year.
