August 17, 2024, New Delhi: In the opening game of the DPL T20’s inaugural season at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, the South Delhi Superstarz defeated Purani Dilli 6 by three wickets thanks to impressive fifties from captain Ayush Badoni and Priyansh Arya.
Before South Delhi Superstarz could reach the score in 19.1 overs, Purani Dilli 6 amassed 197/3 in 20 overs thanks to innings of 59 off 41 from Arpit Rana and 47 off 19 from Vansh Bedi.
With lightning speed, South Delhi Superstarz launched their 198-run chase. Thanks to the flowing strokes of openers Priyansh Arya and Sarthak Ray, they amassed as many as 73 runs during the Powerplay.
In the seventh over, Ray struck for 41 off 26 balls before being caught and bowled by Shivam Sharma. Meanwhile, in the 12th over, Arya achieved his fifty off 27 balls. After beginning his innings conservatively, captain Ayush Badoni hit four straight sixes off Ankit Bhadana in the same over, pushing the team’s total to 140/1.
After scoring 57 runs off 30 balls, including three fours and four sixes, Arya was caught by Arpit Rana off Sharma in the next over. Prince Yadav then easily dismissed Dhruv Singh (1 off 2), and in the 14th over, Badoni scored his half-century off 25 balls, bringing the required score down to 38 runs off 36 balls.
But then Purani Dilli 6 took four wickets in as many balls, and the tide turned against them. After Badoni (57 off 29) and Tejasvi (0 off 1) were removed in the fifteenth over, Sumit Mathur (9 off 10) was removed in the eighteenth over, and Kunwar Bidhuri (5 off 7) was removed in the seventeenth over, South Delhi needed 13 runs from the final two overs.
Next, with five balls remaining, Vision Panchal and Digvesh Rathi chased down the target, demonstrating some resiliency.
Purani Dilli 6 were asked to bat first earlier in the match, but they were dealt a blow when Manjeet (13 off 8) was out of the game in the third over. The South Delhi Superstarz’s breakthrough came from Divij Mehra, who made a diving catch close short third man that Kunwar Bidhuri expertly handled. Despite a slow start, Arpit Rana and superstar batsman-wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant controlled the batting, taking Purani Dilli 6 to 58/1 at the end of the powerplay.
In the eleventh over, Rana got his fifty off 37 balls with a smooth bat, while Pant was a useful supporting man. In the thirteenth over, the pair crossed the team’s century run mark. But Badoni removed Rana (59 off 41) in the same over. Soon after, having scored 35 runs off of 32 balls, Pant was removed by Kunwar Bidhuri in the fifteenth over.
