Jasprit Bumrah had been very upfront about wanting to captain India. Additionally, he mentioned bowlers who had previously held the captaincy titles, including as Imran Khan and Kapil Dev. However, Bumrah’s chances of captaining India have been written out by former cricketer Dinesh Karthik. Following the retirement of Rohit Sharma, he was expected to take over as India’s T20I captain, but Suryakumar Yadav was given the reins instead.
It is noteworthy that Bumrah led India in the Test match against England that was delayed until 2021. The following year, he was again captain of the squad during their T20I series tour of Ireland. Karthik suggested management not to take on any more responsibilities, citing workload as a cause for the pacer to be rested for the important games.
“I keep saying this about Bumrah, he is like a Kohinoor diamond, we got to protect him, take care of him, make sure that he lasts as long as possible because whenever Bumrah plays in any format he makes an impact and that’s what we want,” Karthik stated, as quoted by. “For a fast bowler like Bumrah, his fitness needs to be monitored and he needs to be protected as a player and only made to play in important matches!”
Everything is in order. The selectors’ main concern, he continued, would have been how to use a fast bowler like him for all three formats when he is calm, collected, and mature.

After the T20 World Cup 2024, Bumrah did not participate in any games. The right-arm bowler won the Player of the Tournament award after taking 15 wickets during the competition. He became the first player in the history of the T20 World Cup to win Player of the Match without registering a run. He became one of just three bowlers to win Player of the Match at an ICC event, along with Glenn McGrath and Mitchell Starc of Australia.
