After the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad was called off on the fifth day, India defeated the West Indies 1-0 in the Test series. With Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal among the run scorers and Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj among the wicket takers, India had a lot of success in the two matches.
Two prominent Indian players, Shubman Gill and vice captain Ajinkya Rahane, had a quiet series, scoring only 45 runs and 11 runs respectively in the two Test matches. Dinesh Karthik, the wicketkeeper batsman for India, commented on Rahane’s performance and claimed that because of his career-long inconsistency, Rahane was demoted from the team in 2022.
Rahane’s series was undoubtedly extremely unremarkable. There were a few surprises when he was selected and was designated as vice-captain for this series because he had truly won the WTC final. He had two opportunities to use the bat, but he failed both times. Over time, Rahane has struggled with one important word: consistency. He had lost his position in the side because of this.
Dinesh Karthik claimed on Cricketmood, “He would realize he didn’t make the series matter.
Further discussing Gill, Karthik stated that the fans should exercise patience with the young batsman in the game’s longest format because he has already demonstrated his talent in ODIs and T20Is.
“Like in T20s, Shubman Gill is beginning his Test career slowly, but we have high expectations for him. Nothing particularly noteworthy can be drawn from his recent Test cricket scores. In ODI and T20 cricket, he has truly made his mark. He already possesses the talent and potential necessary to succeed in Test cricket; all we need to do is be a little more patient with him. When he performs well, he does seem different, the man continued.
It should be noted that Rahane and Gill both entered the series in excellent shape. With 890 runs at an average of 59.33 in 17 innings, the former finished as the IPL 2023’s leading scorer, while Rahane was India’s greatest performance in the World Test Championship final 2023 with scores of 89 and 46 following a strong IPL campaign for eventual champions Chennai Super Kings. Rahane may have one final opportunity to establish himself if he is chosen for the away series when India’s next Test against South Africa is scheduled for December.
