One of the biggest errors made by the Indian team, in Dinesh Karthik opinion, was leaving Ravichandran Ashwin out of the World Test Championship (WTC) Final that just ended. Karthik’s response to the 2023 WTC Final was made during his Ashes 2023 commentary stint, when Australia faced spinner Todd Murphy in the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Oval, which served as the site of the WTC final.
It is important to note that India lost the 2023 World T20 Final to Australia by a score of 209 runs. Notably, India didn’t think the addition of an experienced off-spinner made sense, even though Australian Nathan Lyon took five wickets in that match as an off-spinner.
Over time, Nathan Lyon has performed well at the Oval: Dinesh Karthik
“Todd Murphy is about to come in, we know the pitch is dry, and Nathan Lyon has performed well at Oval over time. The obvious modification is thus made, Karthik stated on Sky Sports. “I believe you should let that go, but I believe they do (about Ravichandran Ashwin exclusion from the WTC final). That’s one of the biggest mistakes they might have made, in retrospect.
Ashwin last appeared in the recent two-match Test series against the West Indies, where he took 15 wickets, the most of any Indian player. India under Rohit Sharma’s leadership won the series 1-0 when the last match in Port of Spain resulted in a tie. With three ODI series now in play, Team India is playing the limited-overs match. The visitors won the opening ODI by five wickets and, after dominating the red-ball match, got the limited-over series off to a strong start.
The Pat Cummins-led team won the toss and decided to field first for the fifth Test of the Ashes 2023 at the Oval. At The Oval, Australia finished the first day with one wicket down and 61 runs while the hosts were dismissed for 283 runs.
