When Pat Cummins’ Australia come to India for the high-profile Border-Gavaskar four-match series in February and March of next year, the capital city of Delhi will finally play host to a Test match for the first time in more than five years. Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, and either Nagpur or Chennai are three other locations that have a good chance of being selected to host one of the remaining tests.
Because these will be India’s final four games in the second cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC), the next series will hold a great deal of significance for the country.
In point of fact, in order to be eligible for the summit match, India could have to win the match against Australia by a score of 4-0. This might be an impossible challenge for Rohit Sharma’s team.
The series has previously consisted of four tests, but it will be broken up into five separate matches beginning with the next iteration of the International Cricket Council’s Future Tours and Programme (FTP) in 2024.
Delhi, which has been left out of the rotation during the two years that COVID-19 has been widespread, is all set to get one of the Test matches because of the rotation mechanism used by the BCCI. In December of 2017, the city played host to the final Test match, which was played against Sri Lanka.
“As things stand right now, the second of the four test matches would most likely be played in Delhi. The dates will be announced immediately following the meeting of the Tours and Fixtures committee, which will take place as soon as possible.
The third test match will most likely take place at Dharamsala, which previously played host to the country’s first and only other test match, which took place in March 2017 against Australia “PTI was assured by a top BCCI official, who requested anonymity, that this information is true.
As a result of the fact that Bengaluru has played host to a Test match earlier this year against Sri Lanka, it is widely believed that Australia will begin the series in either Nagpur, Chennai, or Hyderabad. This is the most likely scenario. That test went on all day and night.
It is anticipated that the series finale would take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. There has not been a decision made regarding which of the four Tests would be played during the day or the night.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has so far organised three pink-ball Test matches. The first one was played against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens; the second was played against England at Motera; and the most recent one was played against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.
After the interruption that was caused by COVID-19, the BCCI has hosted a total of eight Test matches, four of which were played against England in 2021 (at Chennai and Ahmedabad), two of which were played against New Zealand (at Kanpur and Mumbai), and two of which were played against Sri Lanka (Chandigarh and Bengaluru).
