After seeing the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction in Dubai on December 19, Daryl Mitchell, a batter from New Zealand, shared his thoughts. The five-time IPL winner Chennai Super Kings (CSK) paid an incredible INR 14 crore to acquire him. Interestingly, he was awarded the invitation after an outstanding performance in the just-finished ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India. With 552 runs in ten games at an average of 69.00, the 32-year-old concluded as New Zealand’s second-highest run scorer.
When Daryl Mitchell was selected by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2022 for his basic fee of INR 75 lakh, he had participated in the IPL before. The 32-year-old, who appeared in just two games, was published in the 2023 edition but did not sell out.
“Sitting here with my wife and watching the entire auction was undoubtedly a pretty momentous night for us as a family. It’s undoubtedly something that will stay with us for the rest of our lives to see your name appear and then go through the entire process,” Mitchell was cited by Cricbuzz.
“As you watch the paddles rise, your heart begins to beat a little faster. But it was a fairly amazing night last night to experience that, having gone through the auction before and not been sold,” he continued.
Not that she knows what’s going on, but she [his daughter] woke up to a fairly wonderful present. However, that is the whole point of these kinds of circumstances: they serve to prepare your family for a variety of aspects of adulthood and the pursuit of their passions. That, in my opinion, is what makes it so awesome. “You do all of this because of them,” he said in conclusion.
The Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) engaged in an early bidding battle when Mitchell entered the fray with a modest starting price of INR 1 crore. DC pulled out of the auction, while CSK jumped right in with a bid of INR 12 crore. CSK finally increased the bid to INR 14 crore by taking advantage of PBKS’s repeated attempts to drive it down to INR 13.75 crore.
