In order to reverse the worrying downward trend in Pakistan cricket, Danish Kaneria recommended that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) select a head coach with a high moral code, such as Gautam Gambhir. An uncommon occurrence in Pakistani cricket recently, the former leg-spinner also emphasised the need of providing the captains with lengthier ropes.
The performance of the Pakistani cricket team, particularly in the past year and a half, has let its supporters down. In both the T20 World Cup earlier this year and the ODI World Cup in 2023, Pakistan, captained by Babar Azam, was unable to go past the opening round. This year’s whitewashes against Australia and Bangladesh by the Test team have also betrayed the nation.
After the disastrous ODI World Cup, Babar gave up his captaincy, and Shaheen Afridi led the T20 team for a brief period of time. Babar was restored after the left-arm seamer was fired ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Danish Kaneria expressed in a recent interview that he was unhappy with the frequent changes in captaincy.
Everybody takes things for granted, which is why Pakistani cricket has failed despite having multiple captains. That isn’t going to work. Speaking to Republic, Kaneria advised them to “stick to your captain stick with him.”
“All right, I’ve appointed him captain for a year. I’m going to ask him. One year from now, I’ll ask him to respond. Nobody is going to touch him; you have my complete support, but you still have to deliver. You have to make difficult choices since you will be eliminated if you don’t perform. Why, he said, things will not function if you do not make difficult decisions.
The former cricket player turned expert also desired that Pakistan hire a head coach who could make risky choices, similar to Gambhir, after studying the tactics of their bitter rivals, India.
Why are other teams doing so well today? Why are the Indian players performing so well? They had an excellent teammate in Rahul Dravid, and they now have Gautham Gambir, a terrific cricket player and man. His facial expression conveys his reaction. He hits the target right away rather than turning around and backbiting.

You must act in this manner. You have to be brave and make decisions with your face, not your back, like a true brave person,” Kaneria remarked.
