The head coach of the West Indies women’s team, Courtney Walsh, is no longer working for Cricket West Indies (CWI). After looking at how the team has been doing lately, the cricket board will also not renew the contracts of assistant coaches Robert Samuels and Corey Collymore.
Notably, Walsh took over after Gus Logie was fired from the same job in October 2020. The West Indies have only won seven out of 24 T20Is and 11 out of 32 ODIs while Walsh has been in charge. So, based on what the team did, the cricket board decided not to renew his contract.
“We really appreciate what Courtney and his technical team have done for us over the past two and a half years, and we wish them the best for the future.” CWI is still committed to our international women’s program and will now focus on finding a new head coach and technical support team. During the time it takes to find the right people, an interim technical support team will be put in place,” CWI Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams said in a statement.
Even though the West Indies didn’t do very well while he was in charge, they still made it to the semi-finals of the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2022. But in the game against Australia, they lost by 157 runs (DLS method) and were eliminated from the tournament. In 2021, when West Indies won both the home and away series against Pakistan, it was their best performance.
On the other hand, West Indies didn’t make it to the knockout stage of the T20 World Cup in South Africa because they only won two games in the league stage.
This was a big reason why CWI fired Walsh as their head coach in the end.
Deandra Dottin‘s sudden retirement was another big event that happened during Welsh’s time in office. Even though she didn’t say anyone’s name, she did say that the team environment hasn’t been good, which is why she decided to retire. Since then, she has played cricket all over the world for franchises.
