The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that the announcement regarding cricket’s inclusion in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028 has been temporarily postponed.
The meeting of the Los Angeles 2028 Organising Committee that was planned to discuss the potential inclusion of eight additional sports in the Olympics has also been postponed. According to a release, the IOC Executive Board will get together to discuss the LA28 Olympics sports calendar.
“Due to ongoing discussions between the IOC and the (Los Angeles 2028) Organising Committee, the Olympic Programme Commission has not yet had the opportunity to hold its meeting to prepare its final recommendation for the IOC Executive Board,” the IOC stated in a statement on September 7.
The statement continued, “As a result, the sports program for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 will be discussed during a subsequent IOC Executive Board meeting, to be held at a date to be determined.”
The 2028 Olympic sports schedule will be changed later as a result of the delay. The IOC executive board, which comprises of Thomas Bach, the IOC president, four vice presidents, and ten other members, will preside over the meeting.
The board also intended to investigate the viability of adding sports including motorsport, karate, kickboxing, baseball, softball, lacrosse, breakdancing, and flag football.
If the board decides to include cricket, the IOC meeting in Mumbai in October will need to unanimously approve or ratify the decision. The International Cricket Council (ICC), despite the delay, is confident about cricket’s inclusion, according to a media report.
Since Major League Cricket (MLC) debuted earlier this year, cricket has become more popular in the United States. Furthermore, despite the detour on the road to cricket’s Olympic debut in LA2028, expectations are still high.
