Yashasvi Jaiswal got an outstanding start to his England tour, scoring a century in the opening innings of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. However, his runs have dried up since that knock, with only one half-century in the following five innings.

In the third Test at Lord’s, Jofra Archer removed Jaiswal in both innings. However, his flamboyant shot to get out in the second innings drew a lot of criticism. He attempted a pull shot in the second over of the innings, as India chased a 193-run mark on a difficult surface. However, the ball deflected off the top edge and was easily caught by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar believes Yashasvi Jaiswal has a lot of promise, but he will need to control his naturally aggressive instincts and play each ball on its merits.

“Jaiswal is a terrific player with a lot of promise, but he needs to tone down his aggressive tendencies at times. In Test cricket, you must play each ball on its merits. A minor error, and you’re gone. He hasn’t scored many runs after his hundred, but consistency is essential at this level. “I have high expectations for him in Test cricket,” Vengsarkar.

Furthermore, Vengsarkar also refused to delve into claims that Shubman Gill’s altercation with Zak Crawley affected his batting. The former India chief selector lauded the Indian Test captain’s batting and the temperament he has shown throughout the series.

“I don’t think so (Incident with Crawley affecting Gill’s batting). That incident was something Gill felt very strongly about and he made his feelings clear. But I don’t think it affected his batting at all. He’s a top-class player, and his temperament and skill level have been on display throughout the series. He played superbly at Headingley, and I don’t think the incident at Lord’s had an impact on him,” the former batter said.
