Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20I captain, recently visited the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for rehabilitation and fitness tests as he prepares to return for the Asia Cup 2025. The batter is recovering from a sports hernia operation he had in Munich, Germany in June.

The 34-year-old, who was accompanied by his wife to Germany, announced his surgery on social media and expressed his excitement to get back on the pitch.

“Had surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen.” I’m pleased to report that, following a successful surgery, I’m already on my way to recovery. Suryakumar Yadav tweeted, “Can’t wait to be back.”

Suryakumar Yadav undergoes his third surgery

This is Suryakumar’s third surgery in three years, having undergone ankle surgery in 2023 and a previous hernia procedure earlier this year. Notably, the Mumbai Indians star was in sensational form during IPL 2025, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer with 717 runs and earning the tournament’s MVP award.

His current rehabilitation at the CoE ruled him out of the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy. Though selectors had initially asked for clarity on his availability, Suryakumar conveyed his ongoing recovery process. With the West Zone team placed directly into the semifinals starting September 4, he will miss the domestic red-ball assignment to focus fully on getting match-fit for the Asia Cup in the UAE, which begins on September 9. Sources close to the player confirm that he is progressing steadily and is optimistic about leading India in the continental tournament.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer also made a brief visit to the CoE last week for routine fitness checks before returning to Mumbai. He is fit and expected to play under Shardul Thakur for the West Zone in the Duleep Trophy unless he receives a late call-up for the Asia Cup squad.
