One of the most bizarre run outs occurred in the sixth match of the Maharashtra Premier League 2025 (MPL 2025) between Raigad Royals and Puneri Bappa at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, when Puneri’s wicketkeeper, Suraj Shinde, threw the ball, which hit the stumps on both striker’s and non-striker’s ends.

The Royals were pursuing Puneri when Ramakrishna Ghosh sent an outswinger to Siddhesh Veer, who attempted to guide it to fine leg. However, he missed the shot because the ball landed behind the stumps. Shinde swiftly collected it and saw what happened.

Veer summoned Harsh Mogaveera for a run, but after seeing Shinde take control of the ball, he indicated for his partner to return and returned to the crease himself. While Veer was able to gain ground before the ball struck the stumps, his batting partner was outside his crease at the non-striker end. Notably, Shinde’s toss hit the stumps at the striker’s end before deflecting and hitting the non-striker’s end as well.

What does MCC’s legislation say regarding such run-outs?

Mogaveera did not expect the ball to travel to his end and had little time to react when it hit the stumps, resulting in a unique and unusual dismissal that stunned everyone.

However, this is not the first case of such dismissal. In one of the Bangladesh Premier League 2022 matches, Andre Russell was dismissed after the ball deflected after making contact with the stumps at the striker’s end before hitting the stumps at the non-striker’s end.

According to MCC Law 38.4, the batter who is dismissed in such a situation is the one whose wicket has been shattered. As a result, Mogaveera had to pay the price for his lack of game knowledge.
