Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah once again demonstrated his brilliance in the Headingley Test against England, taking five wickets on Sunday, June 22. With this performance, Bumrah equalled former India skipper Kapil Dev’s record of 12 five-wicket hauls in away Tests.
Notably, Bumrah attained the milestone in 34 Tests, whilst Dev took 66. They are followed by Ishant Sharma (9 in 63), Zaheer Khan (8 in 54), and Irfan Pathan (7 in 15).
Jasprit Bumrah struck early in England’s first innings, removing opener Zak Crawley.
On Day 1, he dismissed Ben Duckett and Joe Root before finishing the innings with Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue, enabling India to a six-run lead by bowling England out for 465 runs.
India had earlier scored 471 runs, including centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. England rallied forcefully following the opener’s early dismissal. Ollie Pope produced a solid 106 but fell early on Day 2, while Harry Brook appeared to be on his way to a century before falling in the second session.
Brook, who survived three chances, tried to hit his century with a six over fine leg but was stopped by Shardul Thakur at the boundary. Prasidh Krishna dismissed him on 99, and the Headingley fans applauded as he walked back, unhappy.
Krishna was effective with the bowling, taking four wickets, including Pope, who edged a short delivery to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
