IPL 2024: The game at Wankhede Stadium wasn’t exactly a run-fest, unlike what we’d seen at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium around six weeks prior.

Despite being chosen to bat first, the Sunrisers Hyderabad never looked comfortable and could only generate 173/8, mostly because of their Australian contingent, which included Travis Head and Pat Cummins, who both made respectable bat contributions. The most frugal of the lot, Jasprit Bumrah, returned with modest stats, although the opening pair of Nuwan Thushara and newcomer Anshul Kamboj received some attention. Hardik Pandya, the captain, and Piyush Chawla each claimed three wickets in return.

With just 31 runs scored in the chase, SRH had the Mumbai Indians in a precarious situation after winning their first three. Nevertheless, it was Suryakumar Yadav’s valiant efforts that saw MI through, as his shrewd and vicious 102* (51) led his team to a seven-wicket triumph. Tilak Varma, who scored 37 off 32, was the ideal foil.

1. Both skippers are responsible for the captains’ respective performances.

The captains of the Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, Hardik and Cummins, respectively, gave their teams everything they had. They both performed admirably in the opening innings, with Hardik emerging victorious from his first two overs, having been hit for 22 runs, and taking the vital wicket of Nitish Kumar Reddy with the opening ball of his third over. He took two wickets in his last to put SRH behind the curve. In the 16th over, Cummins entered the game with his team struggling at 124/7. At one point, it didn’t even appear like SRH would make it to 150, but his late blitz with the bat powered them to a respectable total of 173/8.

2. Another outstanding performance from Bhuvneshwar Kumar

After giving up nine runs in the opening over of the game, the IPL veteran returned with great skill. The next one he bowled was a masterfully timed maiden over to Naman Dhir, matching Praveen Kumar’s record of 14 maidens in IPL history. Bhuvneshwar’s penultimate delivery of his innings was mowed over long-on for a maximum, disrupting his figures. His third over resulted in the wicket of Dhir, whose torturous stay at the crease was over after a nine-ball duck. Still, it was yet another astounding demonstration of seam-bowling by the master for the countlessth time.

3. SKY’s boundless possibilities

It was up to the hitters to step up and prevent Mumbai from suffering yet another defeat this IPL season, with his team struggling at 31/3 in 4.1 overs. Suryakumar Yadav, a local lad, took up the work with great gusto! He got going right away and took control of the bowlers, especially taking a shine to Marco Jansen, who he dismissed for an incredible 32 runs in the nine deliveries the tall, lean South African faced. His 51-ball, 102-run innings proved to be the winning difference between the two teams, as he scored his sixth century in T20 cricket and his second IPL century to give his team a rare victory in the current IPL.
