Mohammed Siraj’s efforts with the ball during the just finished five-match Test series between England and India have been praised by former Indian captain Kapil Dev. Given how diligently Siraj always follows a predetermined plan when bowling, Kapil even called him a “real hero.” Siraj became the series’ most prolific wicket-taker with 23 wickets in nine innings finished.

Despite Jasprit Bumrah missing two of the five games, the former all-rounder lavished praise on Siraj for leading the bowling unit.

That is an exceptional and uncommon quality. He never appeared stressed: Kapil

As Siraj gave it his best on the last day at The Oval, the World Cup-winning skipper thought back on how he didn’t crumble under the weight of a catch he had dropped on the fourth day.

“On that final day, Mohammed was in a great mood and encouraged the whole crew. The removal of [Jamie] Smith, who was a dangerous batter, restored faith in the Indian team. Mohammed bowled his best after dropping a catch on Day Four. That is an exceptional and uncommon quality. He never appeared stressed. India needed four wickets, and England needed 35 runs. On the morning of Day Five, we took all four wickets in this scenario. Our squad has demonstrated that speaking English is not a prerequisite for winning a cricket match, even though we may not speak it more fluently,” Kapil continued.

India narrowly prevailed by six runs in the fifth match. Siraj finished with a career-best score of 9/190 (4/86 and 5/104) in Test matches. The team captained by Shubman Gill levelled the series at two and went on to win the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
