On December 26, 2024, Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former prime minister of India and the driving force behind the nation’s economic reform, died at the age of 92. It was confirmed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, that he died of age-related medical issues.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh rose through the ranks rapidly due to his outstanding academic credentials and commitment to public service. He led the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) administration, which was led by the Congress, and was India’s 13th prime minister for two terms in a row, from 2004 to 2014.

Prior to becoming the country’s top politician, he served as Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao’s Finance Minister. In 1991, Dr. Singh implemented revolutionary economic reforms that turned India around, saving the country from impending bankruptcy and paving the way for a period of liberalisation and international integration.

Since Jawaharlal Nehru, he was the first Sikh to serve as prime minister and the first leader to be re-elected after serving a complete term.

In addition to the cricket community, political leaders, dignitaries, and residents paid their respects to the former prime minister. On the second day of the fourth Test match against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the Indian cricket team also wore black armbands as a sign of respect.

Celebrities from the past and present, including Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, and Harbhajan Singh, paid their respects to the former prime minister’s passing.

The unexpected passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji, a visionary leader, a meticulous gentleman, and a former prime minister, saddens me What really made him stand out was his ability to handle challenging political situations, his calm and steady leadership during emergencies, and his steadfast faith in India’s promise. For his contributions, Dr. Saheb will always be remembered by the nation. I send my sincerest sympathies to his loved ones. “I am Satnam Waheguru,” Harbhajan Singh posted on Twitter.

“Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji’s outstanding efforts will always be a source of gratitude for India and its economy. May peace be with his soul. Irfan Pathan expressed his deepest sympathies to his family.
