Arshdeep Singh, a left-arm pacer, had an extended bowling session during India’s first training day in Birmingham on Friday, June 27, ahead of the second Test in Edgbaston. He is yet to make his Test debut, but he has worked closely with bowling coach Morne Morkel, indicating that he could be considered for selection in the forthcoming match, which will be played at a location where India has yet to win a Test.
With Jasprit Bumrah unlikely to play in the second Test, Arshdeep has a strong chance of getting his first red-ball cap.
The seamer has played extensively in white-ball cricket for India and has previous experience playing in English conditions, having competed in County Cricket.
According to several media sources, Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna were at the stadium but did not take part in training. Bumrah stated before that he would play three Tests in the series, depending on how his body handles the workload. The quick bowler captained India in Edgbaston in 2022, when England chased down 378 runs to secure an incredible victory.
India is 0-1 in the five-match series as The Three Lions chased down a mammoth 371-run target in Headingley, Leeds. Ben Duckett featured in the successful chase with a superb 149-run effort on the final day of the tournament, while India’s Bumrah went wicketless in the final innings, ending in a crushing defeat for the visiting Shubman Gill-led team.
India is anticipated to modify their lineup for the second Test, which begins on July 2. With circumstances expected to be similar to the dry, flat surface in Leeds, India may choose to field two spinners and try to bring in Kuldeep Yadav as the speciality spinner.
Sitanshu Kotak also gave special attention to Mohammed Siraj to work on his bowling rhythm. Meanwhile, India’s tail-end batting collapse in both innings of the first Test proved costly.
England captain Ben Stokes acknowledged that wrapping up India’s lower order quickly played a key role in their victory. India will be hoping for more resistance from their lower order and improved execution in Edgbaston.
