The Indian squad put on outstanding performances in the just-finished ODI World Cup 2023, going undefeated to the competition’s final match. India finished the tournament with a loss against Australia under Pat Cummins, despite winning all of their group stage matches and upsetting New Zealand in the semifinal. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma‘s outstanding performances helped the Men in Blue reach the championship game.
While Virat Kohli piled on the runs and broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds, Rohit led from the front and played aggressively as the opener. After witnessing their efforts, Brendon McCullum, the head coach of England’s Test squad and a former cricketer from New Zealand, came up to praise Rohit Sharma, saying he enjoyed being captain of the team during the World Cup.
Indeed. Rohit Sharma is a good captain, in my opinion. He is a brave commander, in my opinion. He embraces the challenge and takes chances. He is capable of great things when you combine his strategies with India’s talent pool. The Hindustan Times cited McCullum as adding, “He has been a great leader for not just India but for Mumbai Indians over the years as well.”
They always predicted him to be a future superstar. Brendon McCullum
Additionally, McCullum gave Virat Kohli a lot of credit. Claiming to have known the 35-year-old from the Indian Premier League (IPL), he said that Kohli was seen as a potential superstar.
“Okay, clearly, Virat. I had the pleasure of playing against him during my tenure at RCB, so I know him fairly well. Well, he’s fulfilled the expectation that he will become a superstar in the future. He has had the opportunity to perform on a grand scale and has handled the aspirations and desires of over a billion people. He merits every honor bestowed upon him,” McCullum remarked.
