On Tuesday, September 3, after leading England’s red-ball team to great success, Brendon McCullum was named head coach of the white-ball teams as well.
Ben Stokes, the red-ball captain of England, and McCullum have forged a close bond during their time together in the Test camp. The Three Lions had only won one Test in their previous 17 matches before McCullum was named Test coach. Nonetheless, England has won 19 of the 28 Tests since he assumed the esteemed position. The club has also embraced a daring strategy known as “Bazball” to intimidate rivals and enthral cricket fans.
Stokes voiced his delight at McCullum taking over as England’s white-ball team’s new head coach, stating that the New Zealander’s combination with skipper Jos Buttler might prove to be highly advantageous for the side.
Brendon McCullum had previously worked with Matthew Mott.
“It seems fantastic for English cricket. When questioned about his opinions on Brendan McCullum’s new role, Stokes told Sky Sports, “What Baz (Brendon McCullum) has given to this team and the individuals in the team and the confidence it has instilled in myself and the team is brilliant.”
“I am really excited for the players on the white-ball team to have that experience as well. He is an excellent coach as well as a kind person. With Baz and Jos (Buttler) up front, I can’t wait for the white-ball team to be able to advance. “It’s clear that McCullum has accepted this challenge because he believes he can help and make a difference—just the kind of coach you want,” he continued.
Beginning in January 2025, the former captain of New Zealand would lead the Test and limited-overs teams. During England’s white-ball tour of India and the ensuing Champions Trophy, which will take place in Pakistan, he will be leading the squad. Throughout McCullum’s coaching tenures, Stokes valued his unwavering attitude and capacity for impact.

“You want a coach who will make an impact wherever he goes in the world as a coach, not someone who will just come in and let things play out and whatever will be, will be.” Baz is a very motivated individual. “I find it amazing that Brendon will be coaching both sides for English cricket,” Stokes said in closing.
