On Tuesday, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) revealed the players who will represent their country in the next series against India, which will include three Twenty20 Internationals and the same number of One-Day Internationals. The selection of Finn Allen comes after Trent Boult decision earlier in the year to remove himself from the central contract list, which led to Boult’s exclusion from the team’s roster. After been selected for both of New Zealand’s touring squads for the upcoming tour of India, which will begin in Wellington on Friday, Allen is now in position to play against India for the very first time.
Allen, who is only 23 years old, has already appeared for the Blackcaps in 23 Twenty20 Internationals and eight One-Day Internationals, scoring five half-centuries and a hundred. Due to the fact that Allen will continue to play at the top of the order for both teams, there will be no room for Martin Guptill.
The other noticeable absence from the squads is that of Trent Boult, who was replaced by Tim Southee, Matt Henry (just for ODIs), Lockie Ferguson, Blair Tickner, and Adam Milne among others in the speed bowling ranks.
Building on his return to the T20 International scene during the recent Tri-Series and during last year’s ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, Milne is in the running to play his first One-Day International (ODI) since 2017.
Gary Stead, the coach of the New Zealand national rugby union team, acknowledged that although it was difficult, the team had little choice but to keep their focus on the future.
“When Trent opted out of his NZC contract in August, we indicated that priority would be given to those players with either central or domestic contracts, and that’s been the case here,” he said in an official release. “When Trent opted out of his NZC contract in August, we indicated that priority would be given to those players with either central or domestic contracts.”
“We are all aware of Trent Boult world-class abilities, but at this time – as we grow towards larger global events, we want to give opportunities and experiences to others,” he continued. “Trent has been a tremendous asset to our organisation.”
As Jimmy Neesham gets ready for his wedding, he has been excused from the squad for the third One-Day International. Henry Nicholls will take Jimmy Neesham’s position for the match that will take place in Christchurch.
Because of their injuries, Ben Sears (back) and Kyle Jamieson (back) were not taken into consideration for the team.
Following the completion of the Twenty20 International series in Wellington (November 18), Tauranga (November 20), and Napier (November 22), the tour will go on to the One-Day International series, which will take place in Auckland (November 25), Hamilton (November 27), and Christchurch (Nov 30).
Tim Southee, who is 33 years old and has taken 199 wickets in one-day internationals so far, has a chance to become the fifth player from New Zealand to take 200 wickets in ODIs if he does well in this series.
Devon Conway will continue to keep wicket for the Twenty20 team, while Tom Latham will take over as the wicket-keeper for one-day internationals.
Kane Williamson will serve as captain for both teams as the Twenty20 squad reports to Wellington on Wednesday to begin preparations.
The following players will represent the BLACKCAPS in their match against India:
Kane Williamson (captain), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Adam Milne, Glenn Phillips, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, and Blair Tickner.
