On November 22, in Perth, the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) will get underway. Since Australia hasn’t beaten India in a Test series in nearly a decade, the Pat Cummins-led team is under tremendous pressure, particularly since India has the chance to win three straight series in Australia. Their performance is also somewhat alarming, though, as the Indians are coming off a disastrous 3-0 home loss to New Zealand.
There are also a number of unknowns in the Indian camp. While Shubman Gill will be out for at least two weeks due to a fractured finger sustained during practice, captain Rohit Sharma is probably going to miss the first Test. Although Mohammed Shami’s ailment has prevented him from being included in the team, the 34-year-old is now healthy and could be called up for the next three games of the series.
There has been a lot of talk about Virat Kohli, the star batsman. Ricky Ponting, a former cricket player, has critiqued his form, and since Kohli moved, he has been much discussed in the Australian media. As the most seasoned batter currently in the Indian camp, the Delhi native will need to perform well if India is to fight and win.
In the meantime, his long-time opponent Steven Smith will bat at number four in the series. David Warner, the former captain, switched to opening after retiring from Test cricket, but it didn’t go well. He will now be replaced by Nathan McSweeney at the top of the order for the first two Test matches.
In the meanwhile, Cameron Green will not be playing for Australia in the series due to an injury that will keep him out until at least April 2025. The all-rounder has performed admirably in the few Test matches he has played, and Cummins said earlier this year that he would be depending on him to defeat India. This did not occur, though, and it is one of the reasons Smith returned at four.
The bowling units of the two teams will compete primarily. Following two games, the series will most likely be decided by the matchup between Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood and Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and perhaps Shami. The rivalry between Ravichandran Ashwin and Nathan Lyon will also be crucial.

Last but not least, Travis Head and Rishabh Pant are two players who need discussion. Throughout the series, these are probably going to be the trump cards and main points of differentiation with the bat.
