The decision to exclude fast bowler Ben Sears from the forthcoming Test series against India owing to a knee injury has struck a serious blow to New Zealand cricket. The Black Caps, who were already having trouble with star batter Kane Williamson‘s delayed arrival, have now suffered yet another setback before the difficult tour.
Ben Sears, who had made a promising Test debut in the recent home summer, suffered from left knee soreness while in Sri Lanka for training.
The tough choice to remove him from the squad was made when further scans at home showed a rupture in his meniscus. Although Sears’ exact recuperation period is unknown, team management is optimistic about his return.
Jacob Duffy, an uncapped bowler for the Otago Volts, has been selected to take his spot. Duffy, who has taken 299 First-Class wickets, is Otago’s all-time top wicket-taker and adds a wealth of experience to the team. Despite having played for the Kiwis in limited-overs competitions, this call-up might mark his Test debut.
Jacob Duffy has a fantastic opportunity: Gary Stead
Sears’ injury was discussed by Black Caps head coach Gary Stead, who was nevertheless hopeful about Duffy’s inclusion. Stead said that Duffy’s recent success in the County Championship with Nottinghamshire was a major factor in his selection, highlighting the difficulties of choosing players in New Zealand’s off-season.
“Obviously, we’re disappointed for Ben, who started his Test career well over the home summer and provides a true pace option. Although it’s unclear how long we’ll be without him, we’re hoping he’ll recover completely quickly.
Jacob has experience with the Test team, so this is an interesting chance for him. He has every chance of making his Test debut with three Tests left. Playing for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship recently undoubtedly helped Jacob’s standing. He has consistently delivered outstanding white-ball cricket performances for the BLACKCAPS, and we are sure he can help if needed,” Stead said in a statement.
In addition to the team’s difficulties, Williamson’s groin ailment from the Sri Lanka series will cause him to be delayed in arriving in India.
