The five-time winners, CSK and MI, led the fierce bidding among the franchises because there were only a limited number of seats available for players.
The IPL 2024 auction took place outside of India for the first time. 333 players were up for auction at the IPL 2024 mini-auction held at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena on December 19, 2023. Thirty of the 77 available slots were reserved for players from other countries. While numerous players attracted high offers despite the constraint of only four outside players in the playing XI, Mitchell Starc’s INR 24.75 crore price and Pat Cummins’ INR 20.50 crore bid broke records for the most expensive players bought in IPL auction history.
We look at three players who witnessed MI and CSK bidding for them during the multiple bidding wars they engaged in during the auction.
The following three players were the targets of a bidding war between CSK and MI in the IPL 2024 auction:
1. Robin Minz
During the IPL 2024, Gumla, Jharkhand native Robin Minz was an unknown player. After the Mumbai Indians (MI) team noticed him, he traveled to the UK in July. Miz’s batting and wicket-keeping abilities wow the scouts.
When the young keeper-batter’s name was put up for auction, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) both placed the first bid. Before CSK had to withdraw, both franchises had bid up to INR 1 crore. After giving MI a serious competition, the Gujarat Titans finally entered the picture and paid INR 3.6 crore to get the young Minz.
2. Gerald Coetzee
During the recent ICC World Cup 2023 for South Africa, Gerald Coetzee made an immense impression on everyone with his fearless bowling on Indian wickets. In a thrilling match against Pakistan, he also demonstrated his ability to bat lower in the order. Additionally, Coetzee had previously demonstrated his talent in the SA20.
Because Coetzee plays for the Chennai Super Kings’ sister team, the Joburg Super Kings, in the SA20, the Chennai Super Kings were the first to bid on his name. Mumbai Indians and CSK engaged in bidding before CSK was forced to withdraw at a cost of INR 3 crore. Finally, the Mumbai Indians paid INR 5 crore for Coetzee to finalize the deal.
3. Pat Cummins
After winning the ICC World Cup in India in 2023, the 2021 T20 World Cup, and the 2023 Ashes series, Pat Cummins entered the IPL 2024 auction. Given that he had taken wickets and scored fifty off of just 14 balls in his previous IPL innings, he was in great demand.
The first to put Pat Cummins up for auction was CSK, then MI. Due to tough competition between the two teams, Cummins now costs INR 4.8 crore with CSK. SRH and RCB, however, also joined the bidding war. MI withdrew from the bidding while CSK persisted, but CSK too gave up when the offer reached INR 7.8 crore. In the end, Sunrisers Hyderabad placed a winning bid of INR 20.50 crore, setting a record for the Australian captain.
