The veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will captain the national squad at the upcoming Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup in 2023, according to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Notably, on Saturday, August 12, a 17-member squad will be chosen by the selection committee for both of the 50+ competitions.
Shakib Al Hasan will be in charge of setting up for both competitions, BCB President Nazmul Hassan stated, and he added that the squads will be revealed on August 12.
“Shakib will serve as the team’s captain for both the Asia Cup and World Cup. Tomorrow, the World Cup and Asia Cup rosters will be revealed. On August 11, Nazmul told reporters at his home, “The selectors will choose a roster of 17 players.
Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were the other two candidates, therefore the top board had to convene an emergency conference to decide on a name for both ODI tournaments. The ODI skipper position had been vacant since Tamim Iqbal’s resignation on August 3 following his withdrawal from the ACC competition due to a back ailment.
Remember that Tamim, who shockingly announced his retirement last month, changed his mind during a visit with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. As he recovers from his injury, Tamim is hopeful that he will be ready for the high-profile ICC match that will be contested in India in October.
Shakib has led the Bangla Tigers in the One-Day format, including the 2011 ODI World Cup. He is presently the captain of the Test and T20I team. Bangladesh is a member of Group B, along with Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, for their Asia Cup campaign.
On Thursday, August 31, at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Shakib-led Bangladesh will play their opening game against co-hosts Sri Lanka. On October 7, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala, the team will face Afghanistan in their opening ODI World Cup encounter.
