Recently, Avesh Khan talked about his time spent in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a player for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where Gautam Gambhir served as his mentor.
Last week, Gambhir was formally named India’s head coach, succeeding Rahul Dravid, whose term came to an end after the 2024 T20 World Cup. The former cricketer for Delhi and India will be leading the Men in Blue on their forthcoming trip of Sri Lanka, where they will play three Twenty20 Internationals and as many One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against the Island Nation.
During the 2022 and 2023 IPL seasons, Gambhir served as a mentor for LSG, leading the team to the playoffs both years. He became a mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) prior to the 2024 Indian Premier League and guided the team to victory. But this will be his first season coaching, and supporters are excited to see how he handles the demanding role. Having collaborated closely with Gambhir during the latter’s time at LSG, Avesh reported that the 42-year-old was quieter but still made his points known at team meetings. The right-arm pacer disclosed that the Delhi native consistently requests that the players offer their utmost effort for the group.
“What I have learned from him is about the mindset that you should always look to get the better of your opponent and give your 100 per cent,” Avesh said to the BCCI prior to India’s fourth Twenty20 International match against Zimbabwe on Saturday, as reported by the Hindustan Times.

First T20I in Pallekele on July 26 marks the start of the Sri Lanka tour. The same location will host the following two Twenty20 Internationals on July 27 and 29, respectively. The next three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) are scheduled for August 1, 4, and 7 in Colombo.
