The highly anticipated Women’s Asia Cup final between Sri Lanka Women (SL-W) and India Women (IND-W) took place on July 28 at the storied Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla, following nine days of action-packed cricket.
India Women elected to bat first and got off to a reasonable start until the fifth over, when Harshitha Samarawickrama lost a critical catch, giving the southpaw a vital lifeline. Guru Mandhana. Mandhana took full advantage of the chance, scoring 44 more runs to reach a stunning 60-run innings, her 26th half-century in Twenty20 international cricket. Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh made quick, explosive contributions that helped India Women score a daunting 165/6.
Sugandika Kumari, a left-arm orthodox, was the only bowler to keep his economy rate below six, giving up just one boundary in the process, while the other bowlers took a heavy toll.
As the chase began, a poor mix-up between the openers cost the hosts an early wicket, as Vishmi Gunaratne was run out. But Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama’s outstanding 87-run partnership pulled Sri Lanka Women within striking distance. For the first time in the competition, they expertly managed the chase, leaving the reigning champs without a chance.
The issue was made worse by a string of wasted opportunities on the pitch, such as lost catches and a botched run-out. The hosts won the competition for the first time with a costly 17-run 18th over, completely controlling the game in front of an ecstatic and boisterous audience.
