During the Big Bash League 2023–24 match between the Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes on Tuesday, January 9, at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide, Australia, wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey recalled the contentious stumping dismissal of Jonny Bairstow from the Ashes 2023. In the seventh over of the opening innings, Carey, who was playing for the Adelaide Strikers, sharply stumped someone.
The 32-year-old promptly removed the bails after collecting a wide down the leg side, causing Nikhil Chaudhary to lose his equilibrium. Chaudhary was declared out for a diamond duck after the review showed that he was on the line. Alex Carey later said that he enjoys stumping hitters, whether it’s by approaching the stumps or by standing far back and talking to the commentators during the game.
Yes, whenever a stumping mate shows up, I’m always glad to receive one. both back and up to the stumps. Therefore, that was excellent, buddy,” Carey remarked during the match.
JB: “Magnificent stumping, you would have been happy with that?”
Alex Carey: “Always happy to get a stumping, however it comes. Up to the stumps or back.”

During the first session of the second Test of Ashes 2023 at Lord’s, Carey famously stumped Bairstow on Day 5. The event happened in the 52nd over of England’s second innings, which Cameron Green was bowling. Bairstow left the field as soon as the ball found its way into Carey’s gloves. Seeing his chance to stump him, the Australian wicketkeeper hit the stumps with an underarm throw, and Bairstow was adjudged out after being caught short of his crease.
In Adelaide’s triumph, Alex Carey also scored 36 (26).
Australia was questioned for not playing the sport with the proper spirit after the dismissal, which shocked the entire cricket community. Even when the MCC members confronted a few Australian players in the long room, the players were prohibited from entering the stadium.
Carey contributed 36 (26) to the score after stumping Adelaide, and he also hit four fours and a six with the bat to help Adelaide chase down 166 in 19.2 overs.
