During the Big Bash League 2023–24 match between the Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes on Tuesday, January 9, at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide, Australia, wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey recalled the contentious stumping dismissal of Jonny Bairstow from the Ashes 2023. During the first session of the second Test of Ashes 2023 at Lord’s, Carey famously stumped Bairstow on Day 5. The event happened in the 52nd over of England’s second innings, which Cameron Green was bowling. Bairstow left the field as soon as the ball found its way into Carey’s gloves. Seeing his chance to stump him, the Australian wicketkeeper hit the stumps with an underarm throw, and Bairstow was adjudged out after being caught short of his crease.
In Adelaide’s triumph, Alex Carey also scored 36 (26).
Australia was questioned for not playing the sport with the proper spirit after the dismissal, which shocked the entire cricket community. Even when the MCC members confronted a few Australian players in the long room, the players were prohibited from entering the stadium.
