At Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, hosts India (IND) defeated Bangladesh (BAN) by 280 runs in the opening Test of the two-match series. The hosts had a rough beginning, falling to 34/3, but Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant went on to weave an important 62-run partnership. Later, India scored 376 runs in the first innings thanks to centuries from Ravichandran Ashwin and 86 runs from Ravindra Jadeja.
Bangladesh was bowled out for a mere 149 runs in response. Jasprit Bumrah, the master pacer, claimed four wickets, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Jadeja two each. In the third innings, Pant and Shubman Gill each scored a century, demonstrating the dominance of the Indian hitters once more. Thanks to their genius, India set a goal for themselves in the last innings: 515 runs.
Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam, the opening batsmen for Bangladesh, got things going with solid scores of 33 and 35 runs, respectively. While captain Najmul Hossain Shanto scored an important 82 runs, he received very little assistance from the opposition. Bangladesh suffered a crushing defeat as a result, which also made their status in the World Test Championship (WTC 2025) precarious.
Player of the Match was awarded to Ravichandran Ashwin, who scored a century in the first innings and took six wickets in the second. This was Ashwin’s tenth red-ball cricket award.
