After being defeated by Australia in a series by a score of 3-0, England dropped to the second slot on the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings. This made it possible for New Zealand to move up to the first position.
Ten days separated the reigning champions of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup from their most recent victory, which came at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, and their most recent loss, which came in Australia. Both of these results were defeats.
According to the most recent rankings published by the ICC for one-day international matches, New Zealand has restored their position as the top team in the ODI Team Rankings list.
Before the start of the series, England held a commanding lead over New Zealand with 119 rating points, which was five points higher than New Zealand’s total. They were ultimately in second place, six points behind New Zealand (114), after suffering three consecutive defeats, which caused their point total to plummet to 113.
The exceptional work done by Australia’s athletes was also recognised and acknowledged. They went up one rank, moving over Pakistan, who had 107 rating points, to take over fourth place with 112 points. Pakistan’s previous rating was 107.
As a direct consequence of this, India and Australia are currently equal for the most number of rating points, with India having the higher total score.
India now holds the third spot in the rankings with 112 rating points and 3802 total points. With 112 and 3572 total points, Australia holds the fourth spot on the rankings.
When England travels to South Africa for a three-match series in January 2023, they will have an additional opportunity to reclaim their position in top place.
