During the first day of their Ranji Trophy Group B match in Pune on Tuesday, young Yash Dhull had a difficult time getting started as the captain of a first-class team. Delhi Pacers struggled in the overcast conditions and were bowled out for 191. Meanwhile, an attack led by Ishant Sharma left Maharashtra reeling at 80 for 5 during the first day of the match.
Although the sun did peek out every once in a while, the ball moved around quite a bit throughout the entire game. Pacers Manoj Ingale (5/43), Rajvardhan Hangargekar (3/58), and Ashay Palkar (2/67) caused the damage by bowling fast and full in the corridor.
Despite this, Delhi got off to a strong start, with senior opener Dhruv Shorey (41) and Anuj Rawat (24), who combined to score 54 runs for the first wicket before Maharashtra scored the first run of the game.
Batters were forced to stab at the pitches that Palkar bowled because the deliveries shifted while they were in the air and then straightened after being pitched in.
In actuality, Ingale brought the ball back into the left-handers as Rawat and the seasoned Vaibhav Rawal were both bowled through the gate. Ingale was the one who brought the ball back into the left-handers.
As Dhull attempted to drive on the backfoot, his former teammate from India U-19, Hangargekar, got one to rear from behind the wicket off the back of the length.
He attempted to play the ball with only his hands, but his footwork was nonexistent, and the ball ended up flying to the slip cordon, where Kaushal Tambe finished the job.
In addition, Hangargekar was successful in claiming the prized scalp of IPL specialist Nitish Rana, who edged one behind after appearing uncomfortable in conditions that favoured bowlers.
Himmat Singh (49) played some audacious pull shots and even hit a stunning down the ground six, but he was also caught sleeping in the corridor of uncertainty, which resulted in the loss of the match.
Simarjeet Singh (2/16) immediately got rid of Pavan Shah (3) and Kaushal Tambe (0) when Maharashtra was batting. Then, Ishant Sharma (1/21) bowled a delivery to Rahul Tripathi that he had often bowled during his heydays to the greatest in the world. This delivery was successful.
Tripathi made a determined effort to hit it, but Lalit Yadav was able to make a legitimate catch in the third slip because it was quick and full-angled on the off-stump. Ishant, on the other hand, seems to have put on a little bit of weight after a lengthy absence from playing competitive cricket.
Mayank Yadav, who was making his batting debut, also bowled at a high tempo and took a wicket. Meanwhile, Dhull’s acrobatic fielding resulted in a run-out off the final ball of the day.
Jharkhand spin twins Shahbaz Nadeem and Utkarsh Singh split five wickets between them as Kerala was unable to convert their excellent start to be 276 for six on day one of their group C Ranji Trophy match in Ranchi. The match was played between Kerala and Jharkhand.
As Jharkhand seized some late momentum heading into the second day of the match, left-arm spinner Nadeem took the key wickets of Sanju Samson (72) and Rohan Kunnummal (50) en route to 3/108, and off-spinner Singh ended the dogged resistance of Rohan Prem (79 off 201 balls) as part of his 2/43. Both bowlers contributed to Jharkhand’s success.
Kunnummal, a promising opener who was just called up for the India ‘A’ tour of Bangladesh, continued his strong play by smashing one six and five boundaries on his way to a score of 50 off of 71 balls.
After the team made the decision to bat first, he and Rohan Prem had a productive opening stand of 90 runs.
However, it was Nadeem who provided the breakthrough by getting Kunnummal out leg before wicket at the score of 50. After that, Kerala went on to lose three wickets while adding eight runs either before or after the lunch break.
