On Monday, once he was out of the game, members of both the England and Pakistan teams made a respectful gesture toward him as he made his way back to the pavilion for the final time.
Jack Leach took out Shan Masood first, which ended Pakistan’s opening stand of fifty runs, and then he took out Azhar in the same over. Both of these dismissals occurred in the same ball.
It was a floating delivery, and Azhar had utterly misjudged it as it gripped and twisted from middle to off stump in order to clatter against the off stump.
After Brian Lara, Neil McKenzie, Sourav Ganguly, Mohammed Yousuf, Tillakratne Dilshan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ian Bell, Gautam Gambhir, Murali Vijay, and Hashim Amla, Azhar became the 11th batsman of the 21st century to record a duck in his final Test innings.
Azhar drew a long breath before turning around and making his way back to the locker area. However, he was halted by the England players who congratulated him on his career and gave him a pat on the back as they did so.
After that, the Pakistani players performed an honour guard for him. Earlier in the day, he was also presented with a shirt that had been signed by all of his teammates.
