Glenn Phillips, a batter for New Zealand, believes that Yuzvendra Chahal will play an important part in India’s bowling attack while they are touring New Zealand. Glenn Phillips notes that leg-spinners have becoming increasingly desirable in Twenty20 cricket.
“We have Ish (Sodhi), Afghanistan have Rashid Khan, and every body has got their leg or wrist spinner out there, and they are invariably in the T20 circuit as well as in international cricket. Every team in Twenty20 cricket is searching for a leg spinner to be a match winner.
“I believe that they (India) will make the most use of Chahal that they possibly can. Although I am unable to predict how the team will be selected, I have no doubt that he will play an important role in their offensive strategy.”
Philips believes that Chahal’s ability to turn the ball in both directions will provide India with a significant advantage in the opening Twenty20 match, which will take place on Friday in Wellington.
“He is able to turn the ball in either direction, which is very useful at a venue like Sky stadium that is quite square. If you can keep the batters guessing about the direction the ball is going to go, you will have a significant advantage. I have no doubt that he will be an important contributor in both the ODIs and the T20s.”
The Twenty20 World Cup came to an end less than a week ago, and India and New Zealand are scheduled to play each other in a match that will take place less than a week after the tournament’s conclusion. While Phillips is excited to compete in the matches, he believes that the bowlers are less than thrilled with the short break.
“I am a huge supporter of games that move swiftly because it gives you the opportunity to either improve your form or maintain it for a longer period of time. But I can assume that there are some bowlers who, due to the loads they have to go under, would have wanted a little bit more of a respite than they were given.”
The 25-year-old emphasised the significance of providing adequate downtime for players in the midst of a hectic schedule.
“When coming into a series, you want your guys to be in a calm and healthy state. Due to the fact that there is so much juggling involved in modern cricket, including international cricket, leagues, and domestic cricket, the players will come in exhausted at times, and they do require rest.
It is hectic and it is their professions, but they do need a physical and mental break because it is a really intensive lifestyle. Therefore, you need to ensure that you are able to fill in those areas.
