On Saturday, June 22, India will play their second game in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 against Bangladesh in Antigua. Brian Lara has encouraged Virat Kohli to get back among the runs.
Having won the Orange Cap for the second time in his career, Kohli had an incredible Indian Premier League (IPL) season. But the renowned batter has had difficulty reproducing his IPL form in the current T20 World Cup. In the first three matches against Pakistan, Ireland, and the USA, Kohli scored one, four, and zero runs, respectively. In a Super Eight match against Afghanistan in Barbados on Thursday, June 20, the former captain of India scraped and clawed his way to a run-a-ball score of 24.
Lara stated that viewers may witness Kohli getting back to form in the upcoming match against Bangladesh because of the time he spent at the wicket against the Afghans.
“24 off 24 may not sound like much, but what matters most is that he went outside and spent some time. India is now one win away from taking home this championship. It seems to me that Virat Kohli will only become better as he gets closer to the Caribbean. He’s heading to Antigua next; you’ll watch him toil away on the pitch, accumulating runs’, Lara stated on Star Sports.
This World Cup still has a lot of games left, so we just need to be patient with him: Brian Lara
The management of the Indian team chose to start Kohli alongside captain Rohit Sharma in the major tournament. Yashasvi Jaiswal is a skilled player who was made to warm the bench by this move. As of yet, the choice to start with the veteran has shown to be beneficial. Cricket fans have questioned the approach, but Lara believes that there are still some games left in the World Cup and that it’s necessary to be patient with a player who plays a lot of matches, like Kohli.
It’s a different thing when he’s operating at maximum capacity. We simply need to have extreme patience with him; there are still plenty of games left in this World Cup,” Lara continued in the same exchange.
