After leading his club to the IPL championship, assistant coach Abhishek Nayar of the Kolkata Knight Riders spoke out about what the Indian team selectors told ace spinner Varun Chakravarthy.
Nayar advised Chakravarthy to improve his batting and fielding if he wanted to remain on the Indian team. In three matches of the T20 World Cup 2021, the standout spinner bowled 11 overs without taking a wicket for the Men in Blue.
India lost the T20 World Cup 2021 in the group stages, and despite playing well in the Indian Premier League, Varun Chakravarthy has not been picked for the Indian team once more.
It’s important to note that Chakravarthy has taken the most wickets (41) of any bowler since the IPL 2023. The premier spinner was instrumental in KKR’s championship victory in the IPL 2024, taking the most wickets.

“Every year, Varun Chakravarthy competes in the Vijay Hazare Trophy everywhere, but I recall selectors telling him, ‘You should improve your batting, you’ll be able to make the cut; improve your fielding, and you’ll be able to make the cut,'” It was my way of thinking. This time, he scored a few runs in the Vijay Hazare and sent me a video in which he claimed to have smashed two sixes and scored forty runs, Nayar stated on The Ranveer Show Podcast.

Nayar also discussed the different potential Indian players and how they must eventually shift their perspective and become specialists in all areas if they hope to be included in the national team. A player with only one speciality cannot make it on the Indian squad, he added.
Because they are aware that it is a prerequisite, players instinctively begin to think in that way. Additionally, he is now a better fielder. Because you can’t survive by doing just one thing, gamers work on certain things because they understand that they must do all three, according to Nayar.
