In spite of being given an impossible target of 513 to win, Bangladesh put up a determined opposition, with debutant Zakir Hasan striking a century.
On the final day of the match, wicketkeeper Shakib was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav after scoring a swashbuckling 84 runs, which included six sixes.
After an hour of play, Bangladesh was eventually bowled out for 324, and they lost their final four wickets during the course of the game.
Following this victory, India has moved up to the second slot on the points chart for the ICC World Test Championship.
