Carlos Brathwaite lost all control of his rage and frustration following his contentious award during the Max60 Caribbean 2024 Qualifier 1. Brathwaite is portrayed negatively in the video clip that went viral on social media and captured his startling response to the umpire’s ruling.
The out-of-favour West Indies all-rounder was caught behind while playing for the New York Strikers against the Grand Cayman Jaguars. He was trying to lift a shot off Ireland seamer Joshua Little. The ball bounced off his right shoulder and landed in wicketkeeper Ben Dunk’s clutches. Dunk was very comfortable making some contact with the bat.
Carlos Brathwaite seemed surprised, as the umpire nearly immediately lifted his finger. For a time he stood there, stunned, and then walked slowly back to the pavilion.
The 36-year-old violently struck his helmet with his bat as he was ready to leave the field of play, sending it flying out of the park. The Barbados native lost his temper and tossed aside his bat as he approached his team’s dugout.

In his seven-run innings off of five deliveries, Brathwaite smashed a six. There were still ten deliveries in the innings when he was removed in the ninth over. Because he could easily clear the longest boundaries, Brathwaite understood how crucial he could have been to his team in the death overs. A pundit expressed the opinion that the umpire made a “poor decision” because he felt as though the ball had fallen off his shoulders.

The ball hadn’t even arrived when Brathwaite made his shot. Diligent umpiring judgements can be very frustrating, especially in high-stakes encounters. But when the chips were down, a seasoned cricketer such as Brathwaite would have known that he could have handled things a little differently.
