On the fourth day of the first Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh, the bowlers at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium had yet another nightmare. After taking a 117-run lead in the first innings, the visitors put themselves in a strong position. In their second essay, Pakistan concluded the day at 23/1.
Day 4 saw Bangladesh begin at 316/5, 132 runs behind Pakistan’s first-inning total. Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das, the overnight hitters, only added 16 runs to the total before the latter was removed for 56 by Naseem Shah. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was needed to provide Rahim with some company as Bangladesh still had some work to do, as one more wicket would have exposed the tail.
Mehidy and Mushfiqur exhaust Pakistani bowlers.
The two right-handers battled it out in the middle over a slow wicket that provided little help to Pakistani bowlers despite their best efforts. Rahim achieved his eleventh century in the Test match, and it was richly earned given his poise in the middle. With a remarkable partnership of 196 runs off 336 balls, he and Mehidy helped Bangladesh surpass 500 runs.
Mohammad Ali ultimately removed Mushfiqur for a score of 191 off 341 balls, nine runs shy of a fourth Test double century. In the last session, Mehidy scored a respectable 77 off 179 balls, and Shoriful Islam’s cameo of 22 off 14 deliveries enabled the tourists to end on 565.
Pakistan had only 10 overs to bat out, and in the second over alone, Saim Ayub was bowled out by Shoriful, drawing first blood. With a good chunk of the day’s play remaining, captain Shan Masood (9*) strode to the middle. Alongside Abdullah Shafique (12*), he skilfully navigated the final overs, helping Pakistan finish on 23/1 despite behind by 94 runs.

Bangladesh should not lose this Test match after nearly batting themselves into a position of strength. But Pakistan has to bat effectively, particularly in the opening Day 5 session. The pitch hasn’t gotten much worse, so Bangladeshi bowlers will have an easy day of it.
Here’s how X reacted to Day 4 of the first Test:
